Carved into the Mountain

In the Belly, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

I had the opportunity to spend some time hiking and climbing in southern Utah this past weekend. It’s been a several years since I’ve spent time in this area, and I had nearly forgotten just how stunning the color and formation of the rock is.

This photo was captured during a break between two of the rappels our group made as we followed a creek winding down through the rock. It is just amazing to see, how given enough time, the creek will carve its way into the mountain.

Field of Dreams

Field of Dreams, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

I paid a price in capturing this photograph of a wheat field.

I was bending down to compose this shot and thought that I could get a better angle on the wheat against the mountain in the background by sitting down. Without taking my eyes away from the camera’s viewfinder, I sat fully down on the ground. It was at this time that I became immediately aware (ouch!) that I had just sat on ground that was literally covered in thorns and those little spikey ball things. I quickly made the capture and then hopped up and spent the walk back to the car pulling thorns out of the seat of my pants. The ride home in the car allowed me a chance to experiment with creative ways to drive without fully sitting on the driver’s seat.

Lesson learned: Look down before sitting on the ground when photographing (or anything else for that matter).

Points in a Sea of Color

Points in a Sea of Color, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

My nine year old daughter and I set out to create some photographs of Color this past Saturday. She gathered up numerous colorful items in the house as I prepared the camera equipment and we went to work.

This is one of my favorites from the photo session. We originally took this photo with a white background, but felt it could use even more color. To add the additional color, we spread out a box of crayons around the pencils and used a very shallow depth of field to create the blur. This created the colorful background we were after.

This capture has quickly became my most popular photograph of the nearly 1,000 I have on Flickr. In the past 5 days, it has been viewed over 1,600 times and 78 people consider it a Favorite.

This capture (scanned from a 4×5 photo) was taken atop Phoenix’s Camelback mountain in January of 1989. In the capture Dan is overlooking the city of Phoenix. He moved there in 1982 to attend college (Arizona State) and never left. Dan loved Arizona.

On the Mountain

On the Mountain, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

It’s been nearly a month since I’ve posted a B&W capture of one of my daughters, so here’s a new one. I made this capture as we were climbing recently. She was patiently waiting for her turn on the rope and spontaneously looked up toward the camera as I shot this.

In addition to converting to black and white in post-processing, I added a small amount of lens blur everywhere but the face. I did this to further accentuate the sharpness and detail of the eyes. I also darkened the background area to minimize the distraction away from the subject.

I worked in the late eighties as a professional photographer in Alaska. While looking in my storage shed recently for some old software, I came across an album with several photographs that I had taken nearly 20 years ago. I opted to scan them into digital format to help preserve the images.

Featured here is a capture of a bride standing alongside a lake in Chugiak Alaska. Many of the weddings I photographed in Alaska during the summer were outdoors, due to the beautiful scenery. This brides name is Janice and her wedding took place at her parent’s home.

My family and I spent the day in the Wasatch mountain range enjoying various outdoor activities. Days like this remind me why I love living here so much.

Featured here is a capture of my oldest daughter Elisabeth rapelling down a rock face in Big Cottonwood Canyon. She has previously climbed and rapelled on man-made climbing walls, but this was her first time rapelling “in the wild”. I’m definately biased as a proud parent, but I must say that she did quite well (as did her sister Sarah)!

The two ducks (aptly named Fred & Ethel) who took up residence in our front yard have finally left. They spent the better part of six weeks living in the yard, but recently vanished as abruptly as they arrived.

Featured today is a capture I made of Fred as he was enjoying some seed left out by a neighbor. Fred was (is?) very protective of Ethel and was checking out a nearby child in this photo.

Shoreline

Black and White Shoreline, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

This capture was taken on the West side of Utah Lake in Northern Utah. When taking the photo, I sought to have three distinct elements:

1. The foreground with the shore and the reeds on the right
2. The water and mountains in the distance
3. The whispy clouds

The capture represents what I envisioned. The three elements, when combined, create a nice photograph. I elected to present the image in black & white to allow the various tones of the three elements to interact with each other.

Simplicity

Gull, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

Just a capture of a seagull against blue sky. Simple, yet effective.

Ebony and Ivory

Ebony and Ivory, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

This capture of a keyboard was made in a low-light situation. The slow shutter speed which the camera needed to make the capture created the blur from camera-shake. Normally, this is not desirable in a photograph, but in this case I actually like the effect.

Hiding

Hiding, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

I caught this spontaneous portrait of Elisabeth while she was playing recently with her sister and friends at a local park. I opted to convert this image to black & white to reduce the distraction from her bright colored shirt (the color of the shirt clashed with the natural surroundings). The conversion helps the viewer to focus on the important part of the image, her face.

Old Pink Bench

Old Pink Benches, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

I came across this old pink bench on Main Street in Park City last weekend. I had to wonder if the security cable was warranted. Is there a high occurance of beat up old bench theft in the area?

As for the capture, the fact that the only real color was the flaking pink paint amongst the otherwise plain tones attracted me to photograph this simple scene.

….. and my personal computer at home and at school was an Apple ][

The Apple ][ served me well for a few years, but it was not long after this that I made the move to IBM Compatible computers. Even when the Macintosh was introduced 3 years later in 1984, I stayed the course with the PC, a computer operating system that would carry me for the next 2 1/2 decades and well into the Windows era.

That all changed two weeks ago when I made the switch back to my Apple roots. With the introduction of the new MacBook computer, I have changed to a Mac laptop. So far, I have no regrets. I had been wanting to move to the Mac platform for a few years, but my dependency on Windows for a few select programs has kept me from switching. However, with the recent change by Apple to using Intel processors and the Mac’s newfound ability to run Windows, I made the plunge (for more on this, visit http://www.apple.com/bootcamp).

Today’s capture of the Apple Logo was made by taking a shot of the logo on the lid of the new laptop and bumping the contrast to an extreme in Photoshop.

Who’s Travis Barker?

Travis Barker, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

UPDATE: For those of you googling for Travis Barker photos, click this link to see one more I just added: Travis Barker, Drummer Revisited

I went out to the new Miller Motorpark racetrack near Salt Lake City earlier this month because they were featuring the exotic cars and drivers of the Gumball 3000 rally as it began it’s North American segment.

There was a lot of excitement surrounding a certain tattooed person standing beside a tricked out Rolls Royce. I shot a few captures of the fellow then asked one of the guys standing by “who’s the famous guy”. I was told that he’s Travis Barker, drummer for the band Blink182. Ohh….. After a quick Google search, I see that he is kind of famous, just not in my life.

Now had it been the drummer for Van Halen, I’d have surely recognized him. I guess I’m showing my age 🙂

Park City Jail

Jailhouse Facilities, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

While exploring Park City Utah’s historic Main Street this past weekend, I spent a bit of time in the small museum there. The most intriguing part for me was the original town jail located in the basement of the museum.

Today’s capture features the bathroom facilities in the jail that the inmates had to use 100 years ago. The dim lighting required a long exposure. I made this capture with the help of a bench to set the camera on and reduce shake.

The Party’s Over

The Party’s Over, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

My family and I decided to enjoy a couple days in Park City Utah over this Memorial Day weekend. We made these plans in anticipation of the nice springtime weather typically enjoyed this time of year in hopes of spending time hiking, exploring and whatnot.

IT SNOWED YESTERDAY!

In light of the current weather, yesterday afternoon was spent enjoying the confines of the Park City Marriott hotel. Featured here is a capture I made while having a Photo Safari with my daughters in the hotel.

Footwork

I had the chance to spend some quality time today on the face of a cliff in Big Cottonwood Canyon, just outside of Salt Lake City, Utah. The springtime weather provided the perfect mix of sun and shade for an enjoyable outing.

About a month ago these two ducks appeared in my front yard. I suppose they were tired of all the hustle-and-bustle of the duck community down by the canal and opted for something a bit more relaxing. They spend their days hanging out in the grass and watching the neighborhood goings-ons.

Captured here is the pair relaxing in the remnants of the morning sprinkler cycle on the sidewalk in front of the house.

I find that I now enjoy reading her posts and getting her perspective on things. Her unique comentary has caused me to ‘laugh out load’ on more than one occasion.

In the summer of 2004, I hiked (along with my son and a few friends) up Mt. Timpanogos in Norhern Utah to find a 50 year old airplane crash site. It was a great day and it was really neat to use GPS technology to find the airplane remnants. After hiking to the crash site that day, I didn’t have the energy to continue on to the summit. I have felt drawn to make that trek since.

My goal for this coming summer is to make it to the top of Timp (11,749 feet).

Now that I have put this goal in writing, let’s see if it get’s done.

Miniature Temple

Miniature Temple, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

In keeping with the theme of Tuesday’s post, here is a capture of the LDS Temple in downtown Salt Lake City that has been converted in Photoshop to appear like a miniature model. An obvious secret in doing this type of conversion is to select a photograph that is looking down on the subject. This one definately fits that criteria.

Featured today is an example of the Tilt Shift lens process of making real photographs appear as if they are miniature models. The process is named after a type of architectural camera lens. This particular capture was made at the Gateway outdoor mall in Salt Lake City.

Fire!

Hydrant, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

On my way home from work yesterday I noticed a black plume of smoke coming from an area very near my home. I was still quite a distance away when I spotted it, so it was definately a concern. Upon entering the neighborhood I saw that one of my neighbor’s homes had the garage area of their house engulfed in flames. Thankfully, nobody was hurt in the two-alarm fire.

Featured here are two captures I made of some of the many fire personnel that were on the scene. They were quick to extinguish the flame and appeared to operate very efficiently in there varied duties. After watching them operate for a period of time, I’m convinced that they are the reason that the fire was mostly contained to the garage area of the home.

Sunset on the London Bridge Channel

London Bridge Channel, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

Greetings from Lake Havasu City, Arizona.

This capture was made last night on the London Bridge Channel. If you’re not familiar with the story, the original London Bridge (yes, the one that’s falling down) was dismantled in the sixties and sold to a businessman who had it re-assembled in Lake Havasu City, Arizona in 1971. It now serves as the central point of the London Bridge Channel on Lake Havasu, a western mecca to boating enthusiasts everywhere.

The whispy clouds add dramatically to the color reflectiveness of the sunset. I like how the waves in the clouds are nearly symetrical with the waves on the water.

On a recent windy and stormy day in Draper (Utah) I looked up while driving to see a small patch of blue sky peeking through the clouds. The color of the sky, which was so deeply blue, struck me as amazing. I have to imagine that the high wind had blown out much of the pollutants and created the extremely clear sky.

Very little post-production was done on this image other than a slight crop and a bit of contrast & sharpening. The blue color of the sky is just as it was photographed.

Ace the Cockatiel ::: 1984 – 2006

Ace the Cockatiel ::: 1984 – 2006, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

In the spring of 1984, as I was a senior in high school in Chugiak Alaska, a woman came into the store I worked at with a cockatiel on her shoulder. It began a converstaion that led to my finding out that she was a local breeder of these colorful birds. One thing led to another and soon my parents were in the posession of a recently weaned baby cockatiel named Ace.

Ace became my father’s good friend. Having been hand fed since hatching, he loved hanging out with people and spent the majority of his time on the top of his cage. Early on, he learned to whistle for the dogs and got great joy out of calling the dogs into his room.

After spending the first 20 years of his life in Alaska, ace moved to our home in Utah in 2004. With my parents splitting their time between Alaska and Arizona, they felt that Ace would be better off in a stable environment. He joined our two cockatiels (Sunshine and Mattie) and quickly took over the senior status of the flock. It was exciting to see that after spending his whole life alone, Ace and Sunshine began a May / November romance.

Sadly, yesterday Ace passed away. He had just turned 22 years old. The average lifespan for a cockatiel is 12-15 years, so Ace defied the odds. My daughters created a nice wooden box for him and he is now buried in the backyard.

He will be missed.

Worship Gathering

Worship Gathering, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

I had the opportunity tonight (Saturday) to be involved in the Worship Gathering, a local Christian music event. The program featured four bands from local churches (ours was one of the bands) and had a nice sized crowd show up for an evening of worshipping God through music. This is the fifth time I’ve been involved and it is really a blessing to have the various churches gather together – and the music is great too!

Featured here is a natural lighting shot of Pete playing guitar. This was shot at ISO 1600 due to the low light environment. In a capture like this, by not using the flash you can capture a more sincere ‘mood’ of the atmosphere (and not be too disruptive as well).

UPDATE: Here’s a link to a Flickr set with other photos of the event. I’ll add more over the next day or so as I process them.

On The Line

On the line, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

Taking a photograph from a different or unique perspective can work to give the capture added pizazz.

When you think about it, we walk around each day seeing things from the perspective of eye level. By making the effort to get either above or below eye level the photographer can create an attractive one-of-a-kind shot.

Featured today is a capture I made on a deserted (thankfully) road up one of Utah’s many canyons.

The Piano

The Piano, originally uploaded by LeggNet.

Photography, and art in general, is interesting in how one image can evoke many varied responses from those who view it. This capture of my daughter at the piano, for example, has elicited comments across the spectrum from those who have viewed it (on Flickr).

Here is a sampling of adjectives left as feedback on this image: Beautiful, Concentrated, Stunning, Nice, Angry, Evil, Startled, Lovely, Hieratic, Creepy, Scary, Funny, Scared.

While I’m not overly excited to have words such as Creepy used to describe my lovely daughter, I appreciate the fact that we all interpret art differently – that one single image can cause such diverse responses.

What do you think?
