Ending an Era: The Archiving of LeggNet.com

Back when  I began this blog in 2005, the internet photography world was a much different place than today. This was before Facebook, Instagram, etc. and using a blog was the way to showcase photography. For the first 4 years or so, I worked to post here 5-6 times a week. These posts covered my return to serious photography from a decade away, and the transition as I put aside my film photography background and moved into the DSLR world.

The past few years my posts here at leggnet.com became more sporadic. I routinely used the ease of posting to Instagram in place of a blog post. With this firmly in mind, I have decided to ‘archive’ this blog and no longer post here. To commemorate the move, I have changed the theme back to the classic theme used for many years.

I sincerely offer my thanks to everyone who commented and visited this blog in the early years. It was with this support that I began my journey with iStockphoto which has been life changing.

To keep up with my latest photographic work, please consider visiting any of the following:

Tokyo at Night: Remote Mounted FUJI

Ginza Camera 2-3

FUJIFILM X-T1, FUJINON 10-24 f/4IS lens – 1/7 second, f/4, ISO 1000

I had the opportunity to cruise around a few of Tokyo’s brightest areas on Friday night with my FUJI X-T1 mounted on the outside of our car. Thanks to the willingness of my friend Masao to volunteer his time and car, we were able to capture some pretty cool night shots.

I used an external suction cup mount paired with a small sony ball joint to mount the camera on the driver’s side of the vehicle. Even though the mount is extremely secure, I used my Lance Camera Strap attached to the car as a safety tether in case the mount failed. This tether could also help against theft, but in Tokyo that is not really an issue.

Ginza Camera 2-4-2

While Masao drove, I sat in the passenger seat remotely controlling the camera over wifi using Fuji’s iPhone application. It worked flawlessly never dropping the connection and allowing me to not only change camera settings on the fly, but to also see a live feed from the camera.

It was a pretty cool outing and I’ve picked up more than a few nice shots. I will definitely put this rig to work again in the future when I am back in Utah for a different style of shots.

Lens Focal Length Comparison

Focal Length Comparison 550

Here is a comparison I recently created for my studio lighting class. It shows the difference in nine separate lens focal lengths, ranging from 20mm to 200mm, used for a studio portrait. The exposure and camera height remained constant, with the camera moving backward for each subsequently longer focal length to maintain the same eye placement in the image.

The difference definitely becomes more subtle above 100mm, with the main difference being the relationship between head and body size. My preference is in the 100-120mm range, which keeps the body size from appearing “too sturdy”, but I will routinely back up and shoot closer to 200mm when needed.
