Introducing STUDIO o2o

o2o ribbon-1

I’m pleased to formally announce the completion of the expansion of my studio home, STUDIO o2o. The studio has nearly doubled in size and added quite a few amenities to help in the creation of great images by the photographers that use it.

Some Background

When I re-entered the photography industry as a profession in 2007, I soon realized that I needed a dedicated space for the business. I know many great photographers creating fantastic content that do not have a dedicated shooting location, but for me personally I felt I did. To achieve this I began converting my office space to a studio. This small space served me well for nearly 3 years and I created some very successful stock images in this studio.

In 2010 I had the opportunity to move into a larger space in the building I was in. With this move, I was able to create a “more real” (in my mind) studio. It was around this time that I began renting the studio to other photographers as they needed it. The rental business, while not being a huge money-maker, served its role well in offsetting expenses. Over the nearly 3 years in the new space, the rental business has continued to expand.

Last year I was approached by my landlord about taking over the space directly next-door to my studio. At first I felt that it was not justified, but after serious thought and analysis I realized that it could work if I were to have other photographers use the space on a regular basis.

STUDIO oh-two-oh?

Logo_small sq tight crop

While planning for the expansion, I realized that having my name all over the studio was actually a detriment to the growing number of photographers shooting in the space on a monthly basis. I felt that if I were renting a studio space, I would not want my clients asking “who’s the dude with his name is on the door?”  With this in mind, I decided to rename the studio to a more generic name. The name was derived from the zipcode of Draper, Utah – 84020. The locals pronounce it eight-four-oh-two-oh, hence STUDIO o2o.

Membership

The major part of the expansion was the creation of a second camera room. This growth allowed two separate photographers to work simultaneously in the studio. With this I decided to offer “memberships” to a limited number of photographers willing to make a commitment to the studio. The new member photographers have 24/7 shared use of the new “East Room” in the studio. With a little marketing, we have filled half of the spots already. I look forward to having these new photographers close by.  (Note:  as of right now, there are still a few member spaces available. contact me at rich@leggnet.com for details)

The Studio

With the expansion, the studio now has two separate camera rooms (800 sq. ft. & 600 sq. ft.), a separate entry area, private changing room, 16′ wide cyclorama, makeup/stylist areas, and more. The biggest impact on my existing studio is the creation of an entryway separate from the studio. This, along with the on-site changing room, has greatly improved the function in the existing room.  Instead of describing the studio, let’s look at some photos.

Going forward, I’m excited for the studio growth and the increased opportunities the space gives me for shooting, teaching, and learning.

My iStock Portfolio – 10,000 Images and Growing

istock10k-1

I recently added the 10,000th photo to my stock photo portfolio at iStockphoto.com. I carefully timed it so the above photo would be #10,000 as a bit of a tribute to the accomplishment. It’s been quite the journey since I uploaded my very first image to the site back in 2005. In the 7 years I have been on iStock, I’ve:

– Had over 150,000 downloads
– Taken stock photos in six different countries
– Had my work published worldwide in 1,000’s of publications and websites
– Met a lot of great people
– Grown my portfolio on Getty Images to over 2,300 images
– Became a member of the iStock Inspection Team
– Worked with 100’s of fantastic models
– Opened a standalone photography studio

…and at the top of the list – left a camera on a subway in Tokyo on October 28th, 2010 which led to me meeting a truly wonderful woman 🙂

Creating stock photos is a seemingly never-ending growth process for me. As I begin working on the next 10,000 images, I’m extremely thankful for the journey I am on.

Photowalking Temple Square – 12.20.12

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, and that means it is time again for Photowalking Utah to make our annual outing to Temple Square in Salt Lake City to photograph the holiday lights on display. This will be the 6th year in a row to hold this event.  It really doesn’t seem that long ago that we held the first Holiday Light Photowalk.

This year’s event will be held on Thursday December 20th beginning at 7:00 pm.  The group will meet at the statue located at Main Street and South Temple.  From there we will venture onto the Temple Square grounds to photographically capture this year’s wonderful lighting display.

It probably doesn’t need to be said, but PLEASE dress WARMLY!  Nothing can take the fun out of this event quicker than a frozen extremity.  Tripods are also highly recommended.  For those photographers who do not have a lot of experience taking nighttime photos, there will be several Photowalking Utah volunteers on hand to assist in capturing a great shot.

As always, there is absolutely no charge to participate in this event. Photographers of ANY skill level are invited to join in.

Head on over to the Photowalking Utah Facebook group if you have any questions or would simply like to say you’re coming. I hope to see a great group on the 20th.

It’s December!

FACES WANTED: Mugshot Madness II

Saturday October 27th, 2012 has been declared Mugshot Madness II: Halloween Edition at my studio in Draper. I’m looking for faces to add to the collection of mugshots in my iStockphoto portfolio. This is a great chance to show off your Halloween costume prior to trick-or-treating. There will be a selection of costumes and our great make-up artist Robin Bodily will be on hand to help the participants get into character.

I want faces of any kind, since I will be photographing mugshots ranging from a ‘plain everyday look’ to heavily made-up characters. In addition, if a participant has a profession that they’d be willing to portray, then by all means let’s do it!

Here are the details:

Who: Anyone who wants to participate
What: Mugshots taken for Stock Photos
When: Saturday October 27, 11:00 am – 2:00 pm
Where: STUDIO o2o, 584 E 12300 South, Draper UT

Everyone who participates will need to sign a model release (or if under 18 have a parent/guardian sign) to allow the images to be used for sale on iStockphoto. Each person will receive a copy of their mugshot(s) to use (non-commercially). Take it from me, mugshots make a great profile pic on Facebook, Twitter, blogs, etc. 🙂

If you’re interested in participating, please let us know on the Facebook event page:  www.facebook.com/events/398035483599532/

iStock Download #150,000!

This week I had my 150,000th image downloaded from my stock photo portfolio on iStockphoto.com.  It has been an incredible journey over the 5 1/2 years that I have been an exclusive contributor on the site.  There is a large print display of my “Milestone Images”  in the studio, and this photo will soon take its place among the others.  It thrills me to see so many of the great models I work with featured in the scene.  Huge thanks to everyone who has participated in creating these images.  Now let’s get moving toward download #200,000!

Canon 5D Mark III – In the House!

It’s been just a few days short of 3 1/2 years since I wrote a post about my new Canon 5D Mark II.  Well, today my good friends at Pictureline have come through again – I have the new Canon 5D Mark III here in the studio.  It will soon be going into the #1 spot in my bag, relegating my workhouse Mark II to a backup role.

Enjoy your Tuesday why I get to checking out this new little gem 🙂

Let’s Go Bowling! Models & Extras Needed

I am putting together another large stock photo shoot and am in need of people to be background models and/or extras.  The shoot is on the morning of Saturday March 3rd in Sandy Utah.  Participants will need to arrive by 7:00 am and will be done by 9:30 am.  The theme of the photo shoot is bowling and all of the extras will be actively bowling in the background.  We need people of all age (children over 3), gender and ethnicity.  Everyone participating will be required to sign a model release prior to being photographed.

If you are interested in joining in, drop me an email at rich@leggnet.com or RSVP on our Facebook group (link here) and I will provide you with the details.  It’s going to be a lot of fun 🙂

Studio Lighting Photowalk #5 – February 25, 2012

(2011 Studio Lighting Photowalk – Photo by Dave Daniels)

5th Annual Studio Lighting Photowalk

Wow, has it been five years already?

Again with a repeat of the past four year’s most popular Photowalking Utah event, we will be doing an indoor “Studio Lighting” photowalk. The event will feature eight different studios set up within a large conference room. Participants will be able to walk to each setup photography station and try their hand at shooting. Models will be provided along with assistance from the host photographer at each station.

(2011 Studio Lighting Photowalk – Photo by Sawyer Pangborn)

Again this year we will be working to create a variation in the type of lighting setups provided. This will give the participants a way to work with a large variety of portrait lighting arrangements.

I have arranged with several models to help us out. Just like the previous event, we are suggesting a $4-5 “tip” given that will be put in a pool and divided up among the models after the event. This is purely optional but it really helps to have dedicated models available for the photographers to shoot and this is a great way to compensate them for their time. I’ve got a pretty diverse group confirmed so far including different ages / genders / looks.

(2011 Studio Lighting Photowalk – Photo by Rich Legg)

For those photographers that aren’t carrying around digital SLR’s, don’t worry. We will have a way to sync point-and-shoot cameras via slave to at least a couple of the setups. Everyone is welcome at these events regardless of skill or equipment. There will even be some higher end gear available to borrow.

Here are the details:

Date: Saturday February 25th
Time: 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Location: Gateway Community Church, 584 E 12300 South – Draper
Cost: Free (though a suggested model tip of $4-5 is appreciated)

If you’re planning on attending, please drop an RSVP into the event announcement on the Photowalking Utah Facebook Group (link).

For any questions, please feel free to contact me at rich@leggnet.com or 801.568.1000.

January 21: Photowalking the Leonardo

By Ann Torrence

The typical January weather forecast for Northern Utah is cold. Really cold. Like no fun photographing outdoors cold. Out of respect for January’s chilly weather, Photowalking Utah likes to play indoors.

Join us this month at Utah’s newest cool (yes, pun intended) place to hang out, The Leonardo – a science/tech/art museum located in Salt Lake City. Get your inner geek on and come make art out of science.

Details:

  • Who:  Anyone is welcome.  Photographers are encouraged to bring their family
  • When:  Saturday, January 21 – 11:00 am
  • Where:  The Leonardo – 209 E 500 South, Salt Lake City

The great people at the museum have extended a discount to Photowalking Utah. The admission cost will be $7.00 instead of the usual $14.00.  To receive this price, you must enter with the group at 11:00 am (come early).

Tripods are perfectly acceptable, but please be mindful of those around you if you will be using one.

As always, this event is open to photographers of ANY skill level and with any type of camera. Head on over to the Photowalking Utah Facebook Group if you have any questions or would simply like to say that you are coming.

We hope to see a great group on the 21st.
