One thing that I've found to be the most important in photographing children is to be patient. As an artist we want everything to be just perfect, that's not going to happen shooting children. Also forget about getting them to smile, just make it fun, get them involved and show them the photos you're making, the smiles will come along for the ride. Really great tips! At the beginning of a session I will frequently let the kids play with a pocketwizard and let them set off the lights. This will get them used to the lights flashing and makes it fun for them. My kids (5 and 8 years old) hate to be in front of the camera. In the Summer, I bribe them with a Popsicle. I get the shots I want and some additional candids of them enjoying a treat outside.
