I love the reflection in this shot. The mirror image of the temple or life as we know it. It is not as perfect as the real thing, but it is recognizable. When we look at ourselves in the mirror, how close is this image to our real selves? Do you ever wonder? It this image what people really see or what we want them to see? What is truly real then? Is it the person inside or the one outside?
The water in this picture is so still. The sky is clear, no inversion haze. Everything gives the impression that all is well. It is calm, it is quiet. Just as with our lives, sometimes we give the outer impression that all is well, but underneath we could be a pressure cooker of a myriad of emotions just barely keeping it all together. But the person we want others to see is the one on the outside who looks calm and together.
What is behind those walls and gates? What is so secretive that we have to keep others out. We don’t allow them to come inside and know the truth. We can’t allow them in or to be exposed. They might not accept who we are and what we believe. We are a mighty fortress protecting ourselves from the dangers and impurities of those around us. Austere and magnificent on the outside, but inside are we that same confident, gracious person we reflect to others? Are we really real? Or are we just like the image on the water, which is just an illusion and not the real thing?
